Spare Parts

By Tony Konovaloff

People laugh when they hear about my spare parts but they have no idea whats really in my rig. This list is from memory so there are a few things I probably missed. You don’t need all of this for a day trip but I find it’s easier to just leave it in the rig. Most of it is pretty small and short of the axles and some of the fluids, almost all of it fits inside the tailgate of my wagon.

Two Birfields connected to inner axles.  Two rear axles.  (One for each corner)
2 U-joints and extra c-clips
Drive shaft bolts
Wheel studs (6 for the front and 6 for the rear, they are different)
Knuckle studs (4)
Hub studs (about 10 of them, my full float rear uses the same ones as the front)
A complete freewheel hub
Two fuel filters.  One spin on and the other for my Racor.  Some extra fuel line as well.
Heater hose and brass hose menders.
Extra Fan Belt (My diesel only has one)
Pre-greased wheel bearings and races, 1 set of both, inner and outer.  My axles use the same bearing front and rear.
Star washers and 2 extra nuts for front wheel spindles
Wheel seals and birf seals
Extra c clips for the front axles (all 3 types)
An extra hub nut for the rear axle spindle
One lb can of bearing grease
90 wt (4 qts)
Antifreeze (2 gals pre-mixed)
Motor oil (a full change)
Brake fluid (also used in the clutch hydraulics)
Brake line or two
Diaphram for the injection pump
Assorted wire and electrical connectors. An extra relay
Fuses, lots.
Halogen bulbs for aux lights.  Fortunately all my extra lights use the same H3 bulb.
Gaskets for the front and rear axles.
Winch cable clamps for repairing a broken cable.
Extra hook for the winch cable attached to my choker cable.
Hose clamps.
Radiator hose repair tape (takes up less space than a spare hose)
RTV Sealant
Disposible Nitrile gloves
Roll of paper shop towels
Some cloth rags
Zip lock bags to keep parts clean during a repair
Newspaper to lay parts on.
The parts to fix my air lines including some extra air line. For the compressor lines as well as the lines to my lockers.
Zip ties
Duct tape
Bailing wire
Spring center bolt.
Shackle and a spring hanger bolt
Tire plug kit and 3 spare rubber valve stems
Exhaust Pipe u-bolt clamps and one universal mount bracket. My diesel shakes alot.

I used to carry all the typical tune up parts but switching to a diesel eliminated a bunch of things. Including the extra fuel pump I used to carry for my 62. While you don’t need all of this I just don’t want to be left in the lurch or hope someone else has the part I need. Often I have thought of paring this down but I can’t bring myself to leave any thing behind.
