Brakes
Lilly Reboot Part 4
Stopping better while staying cool. This week was spent trouble shooting brake system and getting the air conditioning working again.
Broken Brakes
Another nice day in the woods, step on the brakes to slow down for one reason and another and Nothing! Yes this happened recently to one of my friends while wheeling down in Oregon. Fortunately, no one got hurt and the rig was in a good spot.
A closer look at the rig showed us that the left rear wheel cylinder let go so there was no fluid in that part of the system.
Knuckle Job
Big, Greasy Mess. Just no other way to describe it. And what adds to the unpleasantness of this job was that it was not even on my rig, it was on my wife’s. But it could have been worse, it could have been raining!
Rusted Cone Washers
Until very recently I have never had a problem with removing the cone washers to do maintenance on the front axle. Either by slipping a small screwdriver into the slot and getting them out the FSM way or gentle tapping on the aluminum hub housing has never failed to get them out.
Brakes and Lift Kits
By Tony K
Anybody who has driven a 60 knows the brakes are not very good. But part of the problem is actually self induced. It has to do with one of the components in the brake system on our wagons. At some point in your messing around with wagons you will come across the following, LSP&BV. This is short for Load sensing, proportioning and bypass valve. What this thing does is tell the brakes what to do when you slam on them and lets them know how loaded your rig is. In the most basic sense it is a mechanical anti-lock braking system. Pretty smart on Toyota’s part if you think about it.
