Suspension
Shifting Springs
Recently I noticed some front end clunking while turning the wheels in parking lots and while stationary. I had already replaced tie rod ends, but the feel and sound were similar. After using cameras to find out what was moving, it was coming from the rear bushings on the front springs. The entire rear portion of the springs were shifting side to side.
Look Around
Whenever you are under your rig take a look around as you never know what you will find. I was doing a brake and knuckle job on my wifes wagon and look what I found. Fortunately it is not one of the two main leaves and I do have another pair of springs handy to replace these with.
But this is all the proof you need as to why you should look around at everything under your rig both before you leave on a run and after you have been…
Broken Springs
So you are out for a nice day in the woods and the worst happens, you snap a spring…. Now what. Actually it may not be as bad as you think, at least not if you have a few things in your rig. Don’t forget that neccesity is the mother of invention.
More than a Leaf
Everyone has heard of add a leafs and most of the time they are dismissed as being a stop gap for real suspension mods. While some of what you have heard may be true there are some benefits that you may not even realize.
Wheelbase and Track Width
There is a lot of discussion about just what is better, short or long, wide or narrow. While our wagons are pretty much set when it comes to length there is some room to change the width either through an axle swap or wider rims. But you need to realize there are trade offs.
Recently I got to go wheeling with two very different FJ 40’s that pointed out differences in wheelbase and track width very clearly. And it was really interesting to see how my wagon and their 40’s all handled the same obstacles.
