Tires
Wheelbase and Track Width
There is a lot of discussion about just what is better, short or long, wide or narrow. While our wagons are pretty much set when it comes to length there is some room to change the width either through an axle swap or wider rims. But you need to realize there are trade offs.
Recently I got to go wheeling with two very different FJ 40’s that pointed out differences in wheelbase and track width very clearly. And it was really interesting to see how my wagon and their 40’s all handled the same obstacles.
Plugging Tires
No I am not trying to sell some new tires. The plugging I am talking about involves the repair of holes caused by less than desirable objects penetrating the tire. I just thought about this recently because I was doing some routine maintenance (translation: washing the mud off my rig) and found that object in the first picture in my spare. Who knows how long it had been there. It was deeply embedded between the lugs of my KM2’s. What may also surprise you is that the shiny blunt aluminum end was to the inside while only a 1/4 in of the pointy steel end was sticking out. And just so you know, some of the other pics are a junk tire I had in the backyard because I didn’t remember to take pics as I did the fix on my tire….
Tire Balance
By Tony K
If you wheel anything like I do, knocking off wheel weights in the rocks seems to be a common occurrence. Or maybe I am just unlucky that way. By the time I replaced my last set of tires I don’t think I had a single weight left on any of the rims.
Taller Tires
By Tony K
When our rigs are not performing up to par rarely do we look at the tires as the root cause. If you really want to see a drastic improvement in the performance of your rig throw a set of stock tires back on it and see what happens, you will be shocked.
Air Systems
By Tony K & Eric B
My original air supply was nothing more than a cheesy little compressor that plugged in to the cig lighter. While it did work it had severe limitations. I decided to install an upgraded air system and it is more than adequate for how I use it. It runs my lockers, airs up my tires, blows dirt out of places it shouldn’t be and will run some tools on a very limited basis.
