Spare Parts
People laugh when they hear about my spare parts but they have no idea whats really in my rig. This list is from memory so there are a few things I probably missed. You don’t need all of this for a day trip but I find it’s easier to just leave it in the rig. Most of it is pretty small and short of the axles and some of the fluids, almost all of it fits inside the tailgate of my wagon.
About my Tires
By Tony Konovaloff
Its time to buy new tires and I thought you might like to hear what I am thinking while I look. This is just about all my options. First and foremost is just what I am putting the tires on. I drive a BJ 60 with a 5 speed running through 4.88 gears in the axles. The gears will allow me to run taller tires. But not too tall. Without moving the axles to the other side of the springs, I am limiting myself to 33 or 34’s. I have heard of people running taller tires but I just don’t think it would be practical on my rig. Another thing I like is that 33’s and the gears I run put the speedometer just about right on.
Spring Under, Spring Over
There is no doubt that a spring over rig has a very cool stance when you look at it. You just may want that for your rig but do you need it. And you have to be honest with yourself and admit there is a drastic difference between wants and needs. Like I have said many times, how you wheel your rig should be the main factor in determining any changes you want to make to it.
Manual T-case Conversion
By Tony Konovaloff
When I put the H55 into my diesel wagon I found out that I could not use my early t-case, the bearing configuration was completely different nor did it have the provision for the 5thgear oiler cup. I had to use a newer t-case. Luckily for me Eric had recently swapped out the auto in his 62 for a manual tranny set up so we had an extra t-case laying in the yard. And lo and behold the t-case for the auto had the oiler cup provision so I was good on that account as well.
