It’s always fun to play with a new toy. But sometimes you learn something you didn’t or really don’t want to learn the hardway.
I managed to borrow a regulator and bottle of Argon for my ready welder as I want to weld aluminum, (thoughts of a lighter camp trailer). Well the one thing they don’t teach at the school of teach yourself is how much brighter the UV rays are when welding aluminum.
I won’t post a pic but I gave myself a hell of a sunburn. And just how did I do that you might ask. To keep things compact in my rig I only carry a small pair of welding goggles that I have changed the lens in for arc and mig welding. All it took was ten minutes to learn just why I have that full face hood on my welding cart! All the exposed skin, including my forehead, decided to turn very red by the next morning. It had to be one of the most painful “sunburns” I ever got.
Lesson learned so now I am on the lookout for a cloth hood to protect my skin so I can still use my compact googles which take up far less space in the back of my rig than a welding hood.
And just what did my buddies who weld for a living say after they stopped chuckling, oh yeah happens all the time with aluminum… You should keep some SPF 100 around especially when welding around others who are also welding aluminum.
As for the ready welder, it worked perfect on the aluminum, considering I am just getting used to a Mig in the first place.
