Current happenings in Tony’s shop

No Speedo

Had a couple of interesting days, the speedometer quit in my rig.  Strange to not have it and this is when you realize just how often you look at the darn thing.  But more than the speedo, I missed having my odometer.  While my fuel gauge is accurate I find myself more and more paying attention to the miles driven to tell me when it’s time to fuel up.

Irritating Rattle and Dechrome

Not that my BJ doesn’t have it’s share of rattles but one of them was giving me fits.  It wasn’t there when I first rebuilt this thing so I knew I could probably find it.  For the longest time I could have sworn it was in the rear door on the passenger side.  First thought it was the cup holder I riveted to the inner door panel but nope.  Next suspect was the door limit bar as it had a sound really similar to the knocking I was hearing.  Even thought it might be the shovel on the roof rack but a rag failed to stop the noise.

Manual Controls on My Diesel

By Tony K

The electronics on my diesel are starting to show their age and rather than spend a bunch of time and money I am just going to convert the glow plugs and the on/off of the injection pump to full manual control.  Push or pull the pump on and a momentary switch for the glow plugs and I will be good to go.

Toyota Chrome

Not that I am a big fan of chrome, I found out just how tough Toyota chrome is.

Had a set of stock chrome rims in really rough shape left over from Eric’s donor.  Needed to use them to mount up my new tires.  I wasn’t looking forward to cleaning them up at all.  But since I was planning on painting them anyway I brought out some rather rough tools for the job.  A wire wheel mounted on my 5″ grinder.

Learning about my Ready Welder

It’s always fun to play with a new toy.  But sometimes you learn something you didn’t or really don’t want to learn the hardway.

I managed to borrow a regulator and bottle of Argon for my ready welder as I want to weld aluminum, (thoughts of a lighter camp trailer).  Well the one thing they don’t teach at the school of teach yourself is how much brighter the UV rays are when welding aluminum.
