Cruise The Woods 2012

Once again Cascade Cruisers put on a great event.  If you live anywhere near (or far from) Portland, OR and you have never been, you should schedule the time to go.  Whether you have a lot of experience or absolutely none, this event will not leave you wanting.  This year was no exception.

No matter when you go be sure to sign up for the Friday Run.  This year was well worth going down a day early.  We signed up for an easy run because I wanted to take it easy and besides that the easy run was going on trails I had never been on which is somewhat difficult to do after attending CTW for the last 5 years.  I am also friends with the Trail Leader, Ken E which always makes the day nicer as well.  We got a bit seperated at the end but no big deal as I was able to get ahold of Ken and let him know another rig and I were OK and we would get back to camp on our own.  Not so much a concern for me but not sure how my youngest felt as he was with Ken, probably glad to be away from his old man.

Friday night turned into a bit of a rescue as Brian’s 80 broke some steering parts, so needless to say it took several of us to get it out of the woods.  Rather than go into that here, there is a write up elsewhere on the site that gives more detail about just what was done to get it onto a trailer for the drive back to camp.  Look for Trail Repair, Almost.  And even the drive back to camp got interesting.  I know my way around Tillamook fairly well but it has always been during the day.  For some reason of the last 3 of us to head back I was the only one who somewhat knew the way back to camp…  Fortunately my bump of direction got us back to camp without getting lost and now I know Tillamook even better in the dark!

In the past the Saturday run has always been a poker run but this year was a little different and I think for the better.  Still a bit of a poker run element but this time Saturday was set up like the Friday Runs.  Being that I have been partial to the Friday runs I can’t say I was disappointed with the change.  I have wheeled with our trail leader for the day many times before and Chad H has always picked a nice route, lots of good trails with minimal time on the logging roads.  Powerline, University Firepower, Cedar Tree, the mild way up and down Seven Up, Hogsback, Archers Firebreak and Rocky Uphill.  All great trails that make for a really good day in the woods even with the large group Chad had with him.  The cap on the end of our day was when Chad got up Can Opener in his Mini for the first time in a few years, what made it even better was that two buggies failed to make it just before Chad did!  There is a bunch of great video of this floating around…  Then just the long dusty ride back to camp but even this is nice after the long day in the woods.

BillyBongo did the cooking of a nice simple dinner of burgers and dogs.  Missed Billy on the trail this year as he is also a lot of fun to wheel with.  After everyone worked their way through dinner it was time for the raffle and once again Cascade had a lot of stuff to hand out, lots of it in the “totally awesome” category (you had to be there) but all kidding aside,  lots of stuff provided by vendors and sponsors to the event.

As usual I have to say Hats Off to all the guys and gals of Cascade Cruisers.   Considering just how small their club is they put alot of work into this and put on one heck of an event.  Something for everyone and I will continue to push anyone I know into attending this run.

Thanks to Jerry H, Chad and Brittney, Ken E, Billy and Virginia, Aaron and Melissa, Daryl and Family, Gary K, Clint, Mike.  As well as the faces I put names to this year for the first time, Jack and Darrell and also all the folks in the club who I don’t know by name but recognize by face…

Just for fun here is the video from inside my wagon going up Hogsback  http://youtu.be/DxgqeLeYvQg

And for a little more fun here is Chad’s successful run up Can Opener.  What made it even better was that two buggies failed to make it up and it had been a few years for Chad.  http://youtu.be/rPxJsP_LIAw

This was the little section of Rocky Uphill that some of us got to play on the night before   http://youtu.be/laIjYKV5q-M
