Getting around and tracking just where you have been is a lot more fun than it used to be. GPS technology has gotten a lot cheaper and it is now practical to put it in your rig. My GPS device of choice is the Garmin 60csx. I like all the features it has available and where I mounted it makes it easy to access with my hand resting on the shifter. Having it mounted up high like this means my eyes don’t have to leave the road.
What’s nice about the size of this unit is that I can take it with me when I go walking and it’s easy to stash out of site when I leave it in the rig.
While it is a portable unit, I don’t rely on batteries to run it while it’s in the rig. I have a 12V cord that keeps it running even when the rig is shut off. All of my DC outlets are hot when the rig is switched off. While it is easy to switch the power over to batteries I would always forget to switch it over whenever I stopped. Having it powered this way prevents having to wait for the unit to restart when you turn your rig back on. And I don’t lose any of my tracking info.
You can even tie it into a laptop like Eric has. But I am not that savy with electronics so hopefully I can get him to write up how to do that.
