Axles

You have to hook the rims to the road somehow…

Air Systems

By Tony K & Eric B

My original air supply was nothing more than a cheesy little compressor that plugged in to the cig lighter.  While it did work it had severe limitations.  I decided to install an upgraded air system and it is more than adequate for how I use it.  It runs my lockers, airs up my tires, blows dirt out of places it shouldn’t be and will run some tools on a very limited basis.

Full Float, Semi-Float Axles

By Tony K

There were two types of axles available on the 60 series, semi float here in the US and Canada and full floats in Australia and other parts of the world. While they do the same thing, mechanically they are very different.

Wheel Bearing Preload

By Tony K

I will be the first one to tell you to trust the FSM but there are times when even I do things my own way.  This is one of the minor deviations I take from the FSM.  I don’t use a scale to check preload on the front (or rear) wheel bearings.

Right up until I tighten the bearings down I follow the FSM to the letter.  Now comes the easy part.

Synthetic Gear Oil

By Tony K

Sorry this is not an endorsement for synthetic as I didn’t have any luck when I put it in my gearbox.  And by no means do I blame the particular brand of oil I used.  All the fault lies with the worn out parts inside my gearbox.

Gears and Lockers

By Tony Konovaloff

To gear or not to gear.  For most of us this is a desire to lower the final drive ratio in our rigs so that we can crawl on the rocks.  But you need to remember there is a price to be paid on the top end if you change gears to improve the lower end.  Gears are only a piece of the puzzle and there are other options.
