Rig Set Up

By Tony and Eric

Lets be honest.  There is no reason you can’t wheel a bone stock 60.  Mind you, getting stuck is much more of a possibility but go ahead and wheel the rig if that’s all you can afford or you just want to see what the rig is capable of.  But once you do, making changes will be high on your list.  No matter how you start out, let your rig evolve.  Make changes as you find a need, not based on some laundry list you found on the internet.  Some of these are simple, some aren’t and some are just things to carry along, but here are some ideas for different levels of wheeling.

Stock

Run it how it is was built from the factory. It’s a Land Cruiser, you’ll be amazed where a stock 60 can go.

Mild

Add a leafs to get a bit of height to get over a few more obstacles.  A Hi-lift jack and a shovel. come along, tow strap with shackle.  CB is a good thing to add right from the start, simple tool kit, fog or driving lights.  More aggressive tires.

Middle of the road

New springs with a mild lift,  small compressor to air tires, more tools,  a few spare parts, 31 (or 33) in tires, U-bolt flip kit, a winch on the front bumper plus a tree strap and shackle, snatch block, a sturdy skidplate, better shocks, additional tow points.

Hard core, serious wheeling

Lockers, Lower Gears, Rock Sliders and Quarter Guards, A winch for the back.  OME heavy suspension lift kit (springs, anti inversion shackles, greasable spring pins, heavy duty shocks), Tire carrier and Spare fuel rack, additional winch gear (chokers, a second snatch block, cable repair parts) Extensive spare parts, much more aggresive tires (at least 33in) Hand Throttle, re-routed exhaust, 2lo mod, GPS, Ready Welder, Heavy Duty compressor and air system, extended brake lines.

And by no means are these guidelines set in stone.  No reason not to make any change you want at any time,  just because you don’t want to get hard core doesn’t mean you shouldn’t move the tire from underneath the rig.  That’s the great thing about these rigs, it all comes down to what you want not what someone else wants or says you should do.  And by all means, have fun!
