Road Trips and Trail Stories

All the places we go and all the lies about what happened once we got there

Tillamook, OR 2010

Another memorable run is now on the books. James and Holly, Eric and Whitney, John, Doug, Wayne, Tony and Susan with Jeremiah and Caleb along with friends Kevin and Mike with his brother all made the long but well worth it drive down to Tillamook . Me being passed by a smartcar was of no end of ribbing by Wayne.
The first night didn’t look all that promising with the weather going from questionable to ugly mostly during the night. A few of us kept pointing to Doug as every time he stepped out of the tarp it started to rain again. Lots of laughs around the fire as usual. Did you know everything costs $100.

Team Trophy Challenge

By Don Hill

Rain Country Cruisers had one team participate. Don, Tony, Eric and Ben made up the team of two “daily driver” FJ62’s.

Rubicon 2010

I do believe Rubicon exceeded everyone’s expectations. Just where does one begin to describe this place. The one thing that held true was Don’s description of this place being relentless, it was. Rocks, rocks and more rocks.

Eric and Mom, Don and Family, James and Holly, Tony with Sooz and the boys all made the 900 mile drive down to the trail head. We also met up with a friend of Eric’s, Al with his nephew Francisco in California.

Welding a spring hanger

Day 1 of Rubicon 2010, I hear and feel an occasional clanking sound coming from up front. Now the first thing that comes to mind is a broken birf, and that would not be the first for me. As I press on to catch up to our trail leader, Don, I get out to asses the situation. What I see definitely stands out, my driver front spring hangar is about 6-10 inches below the frame rail. It was a clean break, right at the weld, or lack of weld I will say. These spring hangars are not welded on how I would have thought. Only a few short spots around the edge and thats it. Not even a center rivet helps attach it to the frame.

Trailside Birf Replacement

By Tony Konovaloff

As anyone who has done it knows, a Birfield replacement is a big greasy mess.  But add in the thrill of doing it on the side of the trail and the fun is multiplied exponentially.  And now you get to know just what I had to go through after blowing a birf apart on the way up Cadillac Hill on the last day of our Rubicon trip.
