Hinged Console

By Tony K

I added a large amount of wiring and switches to my console and to make access better than the 5 screws that normally hold it down I went ahead and put a hinge on it.  This allows me to just tip it up.  Once it is up I have access the wiring for my air locker switches, aux light controls, 12v DC outlets, an auxiliary fuse block, interior winch controls and the negative buss that serves as the ground for all that electrical.

But I do have to admit that I cheated a little.  I am using the console out of a 62.  Its taller than the one that came out of my rig.  And I have this option of hinging it as there is no heater under it.  In 60’s the heater is under the passenger’s tookis.

I installed a hinge on the rear mount pad for the console and a two and a half inch block is fastened to the bottom of the console .  This block is then attached to the other side of the hinge.  This block is needed to account for the difference in the height of the mount between a 62 and a 60.  The 60 console screws right to the sheetmetal while the 62 console is normally attached to the top of the rear heater.  Some minor trimming of the back of the console allows it to open a full 90 degrees and stay up on it’s own when ever I have work to do on the wires.

Another thing to take note of, all the wires have a quick disconnect or simple way to be removed so I can easily pull the assembled console out of the rig without a complete re-wire.
